Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I mainly post about my sewing projects, as I’m building a colourful and comfortable everyday wardrobe suitable for a working mum of primary school children. I really love African wax fabric, so that features heavily. I also occassionally post about family life in Edinburgh and travel. Hope you have a nice stay!

Grainline Farrow dress in Christmassy colours

Another piece of fabric repurposed from its original plan go a super old pattern printed out years ago today, with this Grainline Farrow.

I bought this fabric in Brussels in 2023, with the intention of making some pyjamas from it. Unfortunately I can't add up and instead of 4.3 metres I bought 3.3 metres. Anyway, here we are with the Farrow. It's a relatively fabric hungry pattern because of the slanty pockets which are made by folding the whole bottom half over, rather than pocket pieces. I was left over with enough fabric for  two a4-ish sized tote bags, so the 3.4metres the pattern says you need is a massive over estimate.

I made a size 16 and also did a full biceps adjustment which is a fairly fiddly process for a set in sleeve. I ended up having to redraw the shoulder curve completely and widen the armhole to accommodate that. All went super smoothly though, once I'd drawn the new pattern piece. I used these instructions from Helen's Closet

The instructions on this pattern are great, although I didn't refer to them hugely, except for the bit where you attach the lower front pieces to the upper one. Bit a head scratcher cos you do that before you then fold things over to make the pockets, after which you end up with a more standard pattern piece shape.

The slanty hem and pocket design are what sets this pattern apart, but in a busy fabric like this, the style lines of the pockets are kind of lost. I’m hoping to make another version of this using different fabrics for the top abnd the bottom, sio you can see that to full effect.

That's all there is to say about this! Gonna be wearing this a lot over the Christmas period, I think, the colours are very christmassy!
